Where do I report the books I threw out?
Nowhere!! Zounds!! This means that you can't take last year's book totals, add in the new items, and get the current year's totals.
One of the author's very first jobs in a library involved gathering up all the ugly discards, double bagging them in unmarked brown paper bags and duct taping them shut. (this was Alaska, after all - the wonder is no blue tarps were involved ;-) )Then she would surreptitiously slink out a few minutes before closing in the dark of winter and heave them in the dumpster. Voices of wisdom indicated that without this caution, there would be an uproar about the library throwing out books, and they would be lovingly returned to us from the dump.
It would be a public relations calamity to report this number. Sure, you might keep it locally, but let it be our little secret.
